KiHS is a unique distance education high school serving First Nations students in Northern Ontario. It combines digital learning with local, in-community support through dedicated Student Mentors. As Principal, you will provide strategic and instructional leadership to ensure the success of all students across multiple remote learning sites.

The KiHS Principal will lead a team of online educators, support community-based mentors, and work collaboratively with First Nations leaders and communities. The ideal candidate understands Indigenous education, blended learning, and the unique strengths and needs of First Nations learners in remote communities. This role requires cultural humility, adaptability, and a strong commitment to Indigenous student success.

Salary Range: $141,167 – $154,170

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Leadership: Ensure high-quality, culturally relevant online instruction aligned with Ontario and Indigenous standards; support teachers in delivering engaging, differentiated lessons.
  • Community Engagement: Support Student Mentors and build strong relationships with students, families, and community leaders through regular collaboration.
  • Student Success: Track achievement, attendance, and engagement; implement early interventions and promote mental health and culturally safe learning environments.
  • Operations Management: Oversee daily operations, lead professional development, and support planning, reporting, and budgeting with senior leadership.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Education with Intermediate/Senior qualifications and valid OCT certification; Principal’s Qualification Program Part 1 (Part 2 in progress within first year)
  • Minimum 5 years of teaching experience (preferably in Indigenous or remote communities); experience in school leadership and online/distance education is an asset
  • Strong understanding of Ontario curriculum, special education, instructional best practices, and school improvement planning
  • Knowledge of Indigenous education frameworks, reconciliation, and culturally responsive, decolonizing approaches
  • Deep respect for First Nations cultures, traditions, languages, and community contexts
  • Skilled in communication, collaboration, relationship-building, data use, and fostering a culturally safe, professional learning environment

Personal Attributes:

The ideal candidate will be professional, trustworthy, and adaptable, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. They will be self-directed yet collaborative, able to manage stress, focus for extended periods, and adjust to changing demands. Strong judgment, leadership, and organizational abilities are essential, along with cultural awareness and sensitivity to Indigenous communities. The candidate will demonstrate respect, integrity, and a commitment to KOBE’s mission, values, and confidentiality standards. They must be physically fit, able to lift up to 25 lbs, work flexible hours, and travel to remote First Nations, including by small aircraft. A valid Class G driver’s licence and successful Vulnerable Sector Screening check are required.
