Moving Education Forward
The Student Achievement Officer provides expertise, leadership and support to improve student literacy and numeracy achievement for the KOBE students. They will develop and implement strategies and programs to meet the unique needs of our First Nation students and their families, with a focus on student success.
Salary range: $53,610 – $120,369
Key Responsibilities:
- Build strong relationships with students, staff, parents, and community partners to support student success
- Collaborate with KOBE staff, KIHS Student Success Leads, Graduation Coaches, and Indigenous partners
- Support the collection and use of student achievement data to inform decisions and improve outcomes
- Assist schools in creating and implementing School Improvement Plans focused on student success
- Identify and analyze data indicators to support students at risk of underperformance
- Design and lead initiatives that improve literacy, numeracy, and student well-being
- Support and guide school staff in using effective teaching strategies
- Provide and participate in professional development to strengthen partnerships and capacity
- Travel to KO First Nations communities to support implementation and follow-up
Knowledge and Skills:
- Must be a member in good standing with Ontario College of Teachers
- 5 years teaching and leadership experience in Ontario or First Nations Schools
- Have a strong understanding of effective literacy and numeracy strategies, and be able to implement professional development for school staff in these areas
- Experience in implementing culturally responsive pedagogy, including a deep understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives
- Knowledge and understanding of First Nation and Ontario education systems
- Knowledge of and experience with assessments, pedagogical documentation, educational theories and instructional methods, numeracy, literacy and professional principles and practices related to assessment and evaluation of student achievement
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations pertaining to the education system in Ontario and First Nations and current educational research and strategies and trends
- Excellent presentation, facilitation and relationship building skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Other Information:
- This position requires frequent travel to remote KO First Nation communities, sometimes on a small aircraft
- Fluency in a local KO community dialect is considered a strong asset
- On April 9, 2013, Canada, Ontario, and the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on First Nation education. The Student Achievement Officer position was created through this agreement.
